The Torah is the most
precious article inJewish life. The Torah is the expression of G‑d’s Will and Wisdom and His prized possession given to the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai. The Torah-reading is placed at the center of Shabbat and holiday services and in times of need prayers are offered in its presence. The Torah adds honor upon those
who honor it, as well as riches. And that is just at its left; on the right is long life. Moreimportantly, in these troubled times, “its ways are waysof pleasantness, and all its ways are peace.”
The Torah also represents the unity of the Jewish people. In the Torah scroll, no letter is more important than another; each and every letter is essential to the complete torah. The Jewish people are likened to the letters of the Torah. Each and every individual Jew is indispensable for the wholeness of the entire Jewish people.
Dr. and Mrs. Yitzchok Martin, have commissioned
a Sofer (scribe) in Israel to write a new Torah scroll for Lubavitch Chabad of Peoria, underwriting the full cost. They have thus fulfilled in the literal sense the 613th commandment of the Torah, to write a Torah scroll. To their credit, their generosity is not limited to merely offering this major gift to our community. They have offered to share their special Mitzvah with all who want to join as partners in this noble undertaking, as described in the enclosed brochure.
When you accept Dr. and Mrs. Martin’s offer to join them in their Mitzvah of bringing a new Torah scroll to completion, you will also be supporting the many activities of Lubavitch
Chabad of Peoria thus enabling us to continue our vital work for the coming year and to ensure that
every single Jew in our community deepens and enriches his/her bond with our people and the Torah.
The completion of the Torah and its induction to the Holy Ark will take place in a special public celebratory ceremony, featuring a parade, music, dancing and a festive repast. This event will take place on Sunday, August 28th, 2005 (23rd of Av, 5765 ) We ask you to join us at this special event honoring the Torah. We also ask you to help us to maintain and expand our services to the community by sponsoring a section, verse, word or letter in the new Torah scroll.
